PostSubject: Mixer(s) and mixing~   Mixer(s) and mixing~ EmptyMon Feb 20, 2012 7:00 pm

I totally forgot about this one .__.
so Melon will be our mixer. Will you need help, Melon?
Well, I guess, since overall mixing (volume balancing, giving effects, and mastering) is better to be done by only a person, what we can do to help is timing and clearing the vocals (EQ).

And.
I'm supposed to make something like mixing tutorial here, LOL x'D
Sorry, is a bit busy ;w;
But if you have a question related to mixing, I can help~

Yup XD I'm pretty sure I can do EQ... I think... o___o; I've only used it about 5 or 7 times before though

Edit: Btw, do you want mixers to post up samples of our mixing?

@yunomi and crystel
lol okay, i'll see what i can do. *is searching internet to find the correct phrases first*

@melon
what program are you using, melon? xD
well, EQ is not really required to every vocals. It's mainly used to make all vocals in the same "clear" level.

As I said above, I'm actually leaning to only have one mixer for overall mixing.
Well, more than one can do too, but then they have to repeatedly exchange the mixing result to make the vocal level sounds the same, before then combining it.

And this one mixer can also get help from the other, which including timing and EQ (not really sure about EQ, since there will surely be different perspective.)

it doesn't really cover the practical use of EQ though. well.. i use it by feelings too haha ^^;

So how about mixers use Audacity as our basic mixing program? It'll be easier for us to share files.

I can't show any recent mixing I've done due to privacy reasons, but here're some older ones I mixed when I was into UTAU:

sm11733775 [A collab with a friend, but I did only mixing by myself. I did little to no editing on the UST I used though.]

sm13031155 [I didn't make the UTAULOID's voice though.]

sm15371673 [Likewise, I didn't make the UTAULOID's voice.]

Im also nuby lol @meta so dw meta xD

I used Audacity, but thx to hope now Im using Adobe Audition as well
and have to say that audition is much convinient. havent try mixcrafter yet.

@hope
Lol thxthx xD unforutunately its for audactity xD well will study that as well like the YT vids lol

can any1 tell me the difference betweeen mixing and mastering btw lol?
and I think I still dunno the corrct order for the progresses ...
1. noise reduction
2. compression?
3. Desser
4. Amplify/Normalize
5. Reverb
or isnt the order so important?
and also got probs with compression -.-
and by the noise reduction I shouldnt get reduced 100%?
I dont know if its becoz of my mic, but I want to get the voice to clear,
but it sounds a bit like a phone....

PostSubject: Re: Mixer(s) and mixing~   Mixer(s) and mixing~ EmptySat Feb 25, 2012 10:58 am

@Cryst

There's actually NO real order of progresses.
It's changing actually from every mixer, e.g. I'm using Noise reduction, then De-esser, the Compression and first reverb before I amplify everything in the end. Then I'm using the Compressor once again, for those parts which still sound a little bit loud and the Amplify can't be used there.So actually it's totally different, and everybody has kind of their own "mixing style" in some way..

@Meta

wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php?title=GVerb#Instant_reverb_settings
You could try use "The Quick Fix", it's actually good for any song, but if you're trying to cover Unhappy Refrain, and you're trying to add an effect to this part...

"Sanzan tsumazuita sore wa
Mou ikkai wo akirameta
Korogari tsutsu mo kanchigatta

Soko de anta ga warattetanda"

...you could add delay...

wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php?title=GVerb#Explaining_the_Parameters
Here's an explaination of the settings~ You could actually read through that page, because it does help a lot..~(only if you use Audacity, though)

@Cryst
Sorry, forget to add something""orz
ytchorus.forumotion.com/t2279-mastering?highlight=Mastering
You could look up this one for Mastering.
Actually I guess mastering's just polishing the whole track a little bit to let it sound better than the already finished mix. It's like, mixing is to make it sound very good, and mastering makes it perfect(?)

Ah, BTW, which microphone are you using? Care to share about the microphone a little bit? o3o
Hmm, and,- what do you mean with you got problems with compression...?
Do you mean about it basically or something like that?

And, hmm, Noise Reduction... Normally you shouldn't add to much of it to your vocals; Normally I only reduce it in little portions and always add a little bit in each step I'm taking.
Like, I'm setting the bgm-track to mute; hearing to the vocals alone; and if it doesn't seem to be too distorted, I'm using noise reduction again and again, etc. etc. loop.
Well, I do this till I've reached the limit- of course, this takes QUIET the time...
But I won't do noise reduction in a BOOOM-way, since it kind of distorts the vocals pretty fast...

Maybe it's also because the way your recording? Not sure, orz,...

sure thing <3 but since I use Audition, people with Audition can also help mixing/ask something to me; I hope I can answer ^p^;

Melonramune wrote:

They're awesome, Melon! But since utau voices differ from real singing, it's kinda hard to tell, lol xD but those alone are good jobs <3

crystellaris wrote:

these are all me concluding things LOL
mixing : timing, vocal modification (EQ, dryness/wetness, compression, etc), effects (reverb, delay, echo, etc)
mastering : volume balancing, panning, overall blending (including doing changes to the karaoke/offvocal track if needed)

many people say mastering is done after all tracks are mixed into one wav file. but LOL, I consider mastering includes balancing and things too. (too lazy to do anything once one mixed track is produced.)

crystellaris wrote:
or isnt the order so important?

the order is important x'D at least for real mixers--who use real mixing tools. (not just programs LOL)

but if you're using Audition or other mixing program which enables us to add effects and things in the mixer section non-permanently, then any order is fine~
and yeah; actually reverb must always come last.

(for Audition) for noise reduction, it's done in the track section instead of multitrack. so it must be the very first thing you do.

yeah, noise reduction must not be at 100%. I usually do it at 80% and 30 db. But it actually depends too xD

what problem you have with the compression?
(I dunno if I can help though, I really do it by feelings LOL)

Good to know that it helped you!~
*waits for the sample*

@hope
Hmm, actually I'm not sure, but sometimes I don't really care about the order of mixing.(because I always forget in which order I was making it from "last time" orz)
I'm actually used to amplify in the very end, because... yeah, just because I'm kind of used to it..(...that I always forgot to amplify in Audacity since I've already did it on the slider orz)

AHH YOU'VE GOT YOUR OWN CONDENSER MIC *dies away*

haha yeah, when I use Audacity, I do the amplifying in the slider too x'D

lol, don't worry, with mixing, any mic will sound great <3 you just need to know how to produce the best recording from the mic (no excessive popping, not too much bg noises, etc.)

My mixing's still really bad!
So I'm gonna do another sample with no mixing!
(except noise removal and syncing with bg music, if that even counts)

asdlkjawleajklsdjklskldjk I can't mix AKLSDJALKWEJALKSDL.You can actually hear that from my Karakuri Pierrot sample AKSEJALKDLKASD

@Meta
I guess Noise Removal is a little bit mixing XD
But - you could also do a Acapella if you want to, since that would've been really without mixing(except of Noise Reduction)

*still waits for the sample*

JUST

MAKING THE WARNING
Also lol Acapellas, I could, but it'd be a lot more recording...

@Hope Do you know how to prevent clipping besides angling the mic away from your mouth and reducing the sensitivity? Because even if I lower the sensitivity, it still clips, just at a lower wavelength than normal, plus the volume isn't as loud.

I use a ehh.. Samson Go mic , its an portable usb condenser one.
I totally failed by the noise reduction part than rofl
impatient -> super much reduction at once rofl
by the compression I dont know right settings -.-
while by Eq I do hear differences , by the compression its kinda hard to tell the settings....

Well I try to get the vocal out , instead that it get drown by the BGM
but totally fail ....
